“Peanuts and almonds are rich in monounsaturated fats, the type of fat that is emphasized in the heart-healthy Mediterranean diet. Studies of diets with a special emphasis on peanuts have shown that this little legume is a big ally for a healthy heart,” says Joey Adduci. Healthy fats are extremely important for athletes, especially football players!

Whey Protein Supplements

Whey protein ensures the recovery of broken down muscle. Those who consume whey have greater increases in fat-free mass and muscle strength. The key is to consume whey one hour before and after the exercises.

Cottage Cheese

How One Chef is Getting NFL Players to Go Vegan

When Tennessee Titans outside linebacker Derrick Morgan went vegan, his wife, chef Charity Morgan (who trained at Le Cordon Bleu) quickly joined him, designing gourmet plant-based dishes for their family. Though teammates teased Derrick at first, other Titans soon saw how well he was eating and asked for the meals themselves. Before the end of the season, a number of Derrick&rsquos teammates had become devotees of Charity&rsquos delicious creations such as zucchini butternut squash lasagna and portabello steaks with chimichurri sauce. The players and team have seen the positive results, both in their improved performance on the field and in their faster recovery time from injury. VegNews spoke with Charity Morgan about her role in the Titans&rsquo plant-based journey.

VegNews: How did Derrick become vegan?
Charity Morgan:
Last off-season, he hired a nutritionist and the nutritionist was like, &ldquoHey, have you ever considered to just give up meat? It will lower your inflammation in your body, recovery will be so much faster.&rdquo [T]hose are all things he was very excited to hear because in the NFL, it&rsquos a 100-percent-guaranteed-injury sport, so you&rsquore always looking for ways to bring down inflammation and speed up recovery. He started with vegan snacks and then he said, &ldquoYou know what? I&rsquom just going to do this [veganism] wholeheartedly.&rdquo I said, &ldquoI&rsquoll do it with you.&rdquo

VN: Did you see changes in his performance as a football player?
CM:
Yes, absolutely. Normally it would take these guys three to four days to get back to feeling remotely like themselves again, but when he started eating plant-based, recovery went so much faster. Every football player has inflammation (due to) the constant pounding of the bones and muscles every day.

VN: A number of the Titans are now eating vegan meals prepared by you. How did that happen?
CM:
At first they started teasing him, like, &ldquoOh, Derrick and his plants, again.&rdquo But then when he would open up his container, all the guys at the table would stop and be like, &ldquoWait! That looks so good. What is that?&rdquo It happened by me bringing meals, and they were like, &ldquoCan you ask your wife if I can be on the meal plan, too?&rdquo I started sending them to documentaries such as What the Health and Forks Over Knives, and I remember the guy who teased us the most on the team&mdashWesley Woodyard. His wife said, &ldquoWe&rsquore going to watch this What the Health.&rdquo After he watched it, his wife called me and said, &ldquoWesley hasn&rsquot eaten in 24 hours. He&rsquos just eating smoothies. Can you help him?&rdquo I said, &ldquoDon&rsquot tell him that you talked to me&mdashI&rsquoll fix this for him.&rdquo I sent him a free meal, and from there it was history.

VN: What does the food plan look like for a vegan playing professional football?
CM:
It doesn&rsquot look any different&mdashit&rsquos just more meals. Because they burn so many calories, they&rsquore eating heftier. I started asking the guys, &ldquoWhat do you normally eat? Give me five of your favorite recipes.&rdquo I make them what they&rsquove already been eating, but it&rsquos a plant-based version of it. A lot of my guys aren&rsquot big eaters. They usually have one or two meals that are their big meals and then between is a lot of snacking. I know it&rsquos kind of unbelievable to think like that. They have two days they&rsquore practicing twice a day, and the last thing an athlete wants is to feel heavy and weighed down as they&rsquore on the field running and pressing up against other 300-pound athletes.

VN: Are there any foods that you&rsquove observed to be more helpful to football players in their recovery?
CM:
Yes. I snuck turmeric into almost every meal because we all know the science behind turmeric&mdashit lowers inflammation in your joints. I would send them protein shakes that had the turmeric in it. Turmeric would probably be the No. 1 thing that I used a lot, almost in every meal.

VN: You&rsquore seeing veganism growing among your husband&rsquos team, but do you see it becoming a trend with other NFL players?
CM:
Yes. There is a whole new round of NFL players who are coming into the league, come March and April, after the draft. To have these guys that are embarking on lifestyles like this &hellip it&rsquos going to scratch the heads of the new rookies coming in. The Titans hadn&rsquot seen a playoff game since 2013, but we went to the playoffs this season in 2017 because obviously there&rsquos a correlation between eating right and performance.

VN: There&rsquos always a group of people around a football team. Have you had to address any of their concerns?
CM:
I sent the general manager a meal, and he was blown out of his mind. He texted my husband and was like, &ldquoI cannot believe how amazing you guys are eating.&rdquo

Carbohydrate Intake

The body can store the fuel found in carbohydrates and use it throughout the game when playing football. According to Dr. Leslie Bonci, the director of sports nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a nutrition consultant for the Pittsburgh Steelers, believes that 55 to 60 percent of a football player's game day diet should come from carbohydrates, 15 percent should come from protein and 30 percent should come from fat. Bonci says that a game day meal should resemble a "peace sign," because it will be 1/3 protein, 1/3 starch and 1/3 fruits and vegetables. The protein sources can be fish, chicken or red meat, the carbohydrate sources should be rice, pasta or potatoes and the fruits and vegetables can be anything that is fresh. Eating healthy carbs can be the key to a player maintaining the correct weight and energy levels. "I emphasize carbohydrate-containing foods with lower fat: bagels over doughnuts, mashed potatoes over fries, grilled chicken over fried, frozen yogurt over ice cream," Bonci says. "I explain that upping the amount of carbohydrate in their diet will provide them with more available energy during practice and games. And less fried foods often decreases the chance of an upset stomach, which may also boost performance."


High School Football Players: Is Bigger Really Better?

The pressure on high school athletes to compete and perform has never been higher than it is now. As college tuition rates continue to rise, many student athletes rely on scholarships to help them get a higher education. But in some sports, kids are paying a price for trying to stay competitive. Is it worth it?

Depending on the position they play, many times bigger is better when it comes to football. Specifically, recent reports show that nearly 50 percent of high school linemen are overweight, and that obesity in football players far outpaces that seen in other male children and adolescents.

Two recent studies in the Journal of the American Medical Association and the Journal of Pediatrics found that weight problems among high school football players, especially linemen, were much greater than those of other young males. The problem tends to be greater among linemen, since they are typically the biggest players in football. And the size of these athletes appears to be increasing as time goes on.

Another study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found 45 percent of young linemen were overweight and 9 percent had severe adult obesity. That compared with 18 percent of male children and adolescents overall who are overweight.

So why isn't bigger necessarily better? Well, in the short term, it's not healthy to be carrying so much extra weight (most of which is not going to be muscle weight), especially for such young kids. But the long term effects of these excess pounds can be even worse. As anyone who's had long term weight problems knows, it puts extra pressure on your bones and joints- which can lead to arthritis, lower back problems, joint damage, knee injuries and more.

Ease of scoring tickets: With 300,000 tickets available, you shouldn’t have any problems.

Position yourself: While Indy’s one of the few speedways where you can sit inside the track, the higher the seats (in the double-letter rows), the better the views. Longtime fans recommend the front straight for pre/ post-race activities, and either E-Stand (1st turn) or NW Vista (4th turn) for first-timers.

Must-try signature food/ drink: Plan on eating a fair share of dogs, burgers, BBQ, and sausage — locals in Indy know how to work the grill. That said, keep your eyes peeled for both giant grilled BBQ turkey legs, and Indiana’s official sammie — a breaded/ fried pork tenderloin on a bun w/ onion, pickle, and mustard.

Must-hit spot before/ after: The Slipper Noodle Inn is Indiana’s oldest bar and one of the best blues joints in the country. If your ears aren&rsquot still ringing from the race, they should be soon, with two bands playing all night.

The league’s second oldest stadium, Wrigley’s ivy-covered walls are among the most iconic landmarks in baseball. And the Cubs/ St. Louis Cardinals rivalry is one of the game’s oldest, spanning 2,000 games since 1885.

Ease of scoring tickets: As the Cubbies haven&rsquot exactly been lighting it up in recent years, tickets aren’t hard to come by.

The dip is best served with a corn chip, or Fritos would go wonderfully with the chip dip.

But through reading and finishing this book, I ended up getting an almost 300-page analysis on what the Schwartz brothers are all about on and off the football field.

I learned some stuff about the Jewish faith (mainly food, with recipes of some of their favorite cultural foods near and at the end of the book), that they played high school football out here in Los Angeles County (Pacific Palisades High School), and that they both have families who command their love and attention.

It was clear in this book that playing football doesn't define the Schwartz brothers. They have other life interests which should make their transition from football to the real world easy as pie.
